Abstract

Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the factors affecting sexual autonomy of college students.

Method: This study is a descriptive research using a structured questionnaires. Data collection was done conducted on two university nursing students whose research acceptance was made from Oct. 1, 2018 to Feb. 10, 2019. The collected data were analyzed using R 3.6.0.

Result: The level of sexual autonomy was significantly different according to the dating experience. Sexual autonomy was significantly correlated with sex knowledge, communication with the father, and communication with the mother, and negatively correlated with rejection sensitivity. According to regression analysis, sexual intercourse experience and rejection sensitivity had a significant effect on sexual autonomy. The explanatory power of factors affecting sexual autonomy was 30.0% (F = 12.11, p <0.001).

Conclusion: As a health professional, nurses should educate parents about the importance of strengthening communication between parents and children and nurturing them so that they feel loved from an early age in order to increase sexual autonomy among adolescents.
